1st Annual Prairie Medicinal Cannabis Cup Saskatoon Sask. July 2011
3 days of good time with good people. Jeff at Skunk Funk was the organizer and host for this event. Alberta sponsors were Calgary 420 and KDK Distributors. The only negative issue was a medical cannabis shipment from B.C. was confiscated by the local RCMP. Fortunately this did not affect the mood of the event. In the end (after the event ended) the sized medical cannabis shipment was returned to it's rightful owner. There was one entry from Alberta, Serious Seeds AK 47 and it came in at 5th place in the competition. BC Bud Depot won first place with their God Bud which also won the first place Indica trophy at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2004. Live entertainment, speakers, food and of course as always awesome like minded people enjoying top shelve medical cannabis. The 3 day event was so successful the next Prairie Medicinal Cannabis Cup will be four days long and will be in September 2012.

The 50 Plus Living Show Oct. 2011

Postmedia News articles across Canada 2011 with a huge jump in early December 2011.
That started in the spring when I read a Postmedia News national pain series article in the Calgary Herald. A short paragraph about a paraplegic with a Health Canada license that could not get his attendant to help him medicate (smoke). A less then 250 word Letter to The Editor (LTE) about the massive failing of the Health Canada medical cannabis program turned into a whole lot of media attention across the Canada. Add KDK Distributors donated a free brand new in the box Herbalaire to the paraplegic with a Health Canada license (Kurt) in Toronto. Amy Brown gladly offered to visit Kurt and show him how to use the device properly and educated Kurt about the huge medical cannabis community in Toronto.

2011 there were a large number of other positive Alberta cannabis community actions through out the year that most of you will never hear about. There is just not enough time or space to write about them all.

Looking forward to 2012 NORML Canada Women's Alliance will have their first meeting in Calgary and central Alberta in January. PROGRESS, NOT PRISONS, Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP) National Conference 2012, hosted by University of Calgary CSSDP chapter March 2-4. Calgary 420 will again be at the Big Four Building on the Calgary Stampede Grounds with a trade show display booth at the 50 Plus Living show April 14 and 15. 4/20 being on a Friday in 2012 we are looking at a private fund raiser event to celebrate 420. Calgary’s 8th annual Worldwide Marijuana March Saturday May 5 at Calgary City Hall. Add with a little luck and a lot of strong support from the cannabis community we will see Calgary and even Alberta’s first ever combined vapour lounge / activist center open up in conservative Calgary! Our office will open on January 1 / 2012 and we will be working hard towards opening the first ever vapour lounge in Calgary and Alberta later in 2012.

A huge thank you to all that supported Alberta cannabis community efforts in 2011! We can’t express here how much we appreciate all the incredible support our cannabis communities received in 2011 and year’s past.

The 50 Plus Living Show was a great opportunity for positive actions for our community in so many ways. 50 plus Canadians are the largest part of the voting population. Less reasons to be fearful of the undeserved stigma cannabis has had to bare for all to long. Their children are more likely to be adults which can reduce the fear of the seriously negative impact cannabis prohibition can have on younger families with under adult age children living at home. Retired which reduces the fear of the seriously negative impact cannabis prohibition can have on their financial well being such as the loss of employment, fines, lawyer fees and even prison sentences. Additionally they are more likely to have more spare time to direct towards activism / advocacy. They more likely to have been exposed to cannabis in any number of ways such as they have tried cannabis in the past, their children might have tried cannabis or they know friends that have tried it or even consumed cannabis for medical reasons.

Our group of volunteers are mostly Health Canada licensed to posses and consume medical cannabis legally. This allows us to have a legal high quality medical cannabis display for people to see and even smell. We also had a lot of free cannabis related magazines, scientific fact based information and even free samples of hemp hearts and hemp bars donated by Rocky Mountain Grain Products. A video display and other factual displays as well. Add Lisa Mamakind Kirkman, Kelly Christie, Debbie Fagin, Rob Blair and Gary from Canmore to the mix and we had a strong team of people to properly and truthfully educate the shows attendees.

There was no doubt the majority of the people we talked to believe medical cannabis should be easier available for those that it can improve the quality of their lives. Many also felt cannabis prohibition is definitely not the right drug policy for Canada. So much so we received many very positive comments about our presence at the show. “It is about time! Awesome to see this type of display and information here! I can’t wait to tell my kids you are at this trade show!”

A quote from the show management “A big thank you for participating with us at last weekend's 50 Plus Living Show.  Your team is amazing and a great bunch of people.  I trust everything went well for you.”
As expected we have been invited to the next The 50 Plus Living Show in the spring of 2012. We will have a improved display booth and more volunteers for the next show April 14 and 15 2012.

As we expected there were a few people that were seriously locked into the tired old reefer madness nonsense. The best part here is all of these types of people that we got to talk with walked away with a smile on their face and some seriously solid education in their minds.

Lastly and most importantly the volunteers could not make the many very important and strongly positive actions happen with out the strong support from all our generous sponsors both private and the businesses that support our community. We all can do our part by shopping at the supportive businesses and encouraging our friends to do the same. A thank you shout out for the continuing support would be a nice touch too.

Sponsors for the first The 50 Plus Living Show are:
KDK Distributors (CANADIAN WHOLESALE ONLY)

This year was much different then last year for Debbie and I and the expo as a whole. There was a huge improvement in the floor plan laid out for the TY expo. Instead of being spread out over multiple floors everything was on one floor including the huge vapour lounge. More exhibitors, entertainment, attendees, information and free stuff.  Even a much more upbeat positive vide surrounded this years 3 day event over last year. The VIP dinner was at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre itself unlike last year when two boats were used. Additionally there were off site after parties at Vapour Central and even Skunk Magazine sponsored a awesome off site party that Kelly Christie and I ended up being coerced onto the stage to be included in part of the show for attendees enjoyment and my embarrassment and enjoyment (yes I have fun with it). Kelly’s performance on stage was just awesome the crowd loved it.

One glaring example, for myself personally, of the change in attitude amount the attendees was last year a attendee approached me with some disturbing comments one being along the line, the expo was going to be raided by the police and so on. I of course knew right away this was not at all true! I went on to try to gently explain to this person that their fears were not at all based on reality and why I knew what I was telling them to be actual facts. Sadly I think I was not able to convince this person and they continued on their way. I assume continuing to spread what they still believed to be true the expo was going to be raided. This year for the 2nd annual Treating Yourself Expo the exact same fearful person from last year was a volunteer in a booth no less.

The 3rd Annual Treating Yourself Medical Marijuana & Hemp Expo will once again be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. May 25, 26 and 27 / 2012.
